How does one-way mirror film work?

The appearance of the mirror film is completely similar to that of a conventional mirror. However, visibility is maintained only from the darker side. In other words, the mirror film reflects the outside light.

Thus, from the outside, you can see yourself in the glass surface, without seeing what is on the other side. The visibility is "normal" from the inside, where you can see the outside in perfect transparency.

In addition to the mirroring effect, mirror window films are available in a variety of designs that produce different effects:

• Classic mirror film where both sides are reflective with a pronounced mirror effect. Ideal for perfect visibility from the inside.
• Film with a non-reflective black side (inside) and a reflective silver side for an optimal mirror effect (no reflection when looking from the inside)

Advantages of mirror effect film

Much more than a simple decorative film, mirror film has a few advantages. First, let's talk about the cost. Like all common window films (anti-fog, anti-wave, anti-microbial, etc.), this one is offered on the market at a very attractive price.

Secondly, this mirror effect coating offers a wide range of versions. More or less dark, it transmits more or less light and the mirror effect is therefore adjustable to be more or less strong. The light transmission is low with a dark film. Thus, for a permanent mirror effect (which does not reverse according to the light on either side of the glass wall), a very dark and therefore very reflective film should be chosen.

Mirror effect film** also has a thermal insulation function. However, this function is less important than that of an [anti-heat film] (/en/blog/solar-window-film-protection) which is more suitable if the rejection of the sun's rays is your main objective.

How to apply a mirror effect film?

Relatively easy to do, the application of a mirror effect film requires a few basic tools, namely a scraper, a cutter, a squeegee and a good glass cleaning spray.

1. clean the surface to be fitted with the cleaner and the scraper so that it is smooth and free of grease.
2. Scrape the glass if there are rough spots.
3. pre-cut the mirror effect film with a cutter with an extra 3 cm margin compared to the exact dimensions of the surface to be filmed.
4. apply the film with care.
