Types of Insulation

Concrete blocks, commonly used for foundations and walls, can be insulated in multiple ways. When the cores are not filled with steel and concrete for structural reasons, they can be filled with insulation, enhancing the wall's average R-value. However, studies have indicated that core-filling provides limited fuel savings since heat can easily conduct through solid wall elements.

Applying insulation over the blocks' surface, either externally or internally, proves to be more efficient. Exterior insulation helps to keep the thermal mass of the blocks inside the conditioned area, contributing to more stable indoor temperatures.

Some concrete block manufacturers integrate polystyrene beads, while others design blocks that accommodate rigid foam inserts. In the U.S., two types of solid, precast autoclaved concrete masonry units are available: autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and autoclaved cellular concrete (ACC). These materials contain approximately 80% air by volume and have been popular in Europe since the late 1970s. Autoclaved concrete can deliver up to ten times the insulation value of traditional concrete.

Lightweight and easy to work with, these blocks can be sawn, nailed, and shaped with regular tools. However, they absorb water easily, which necessitates moisture protection. Precast ACC blocks use fly ash instead of high-silica sand, distinguishing them from AAC, with fly ash being a byproduct of coal combustion in power plants.

Hollow-core units, created by mixing concrete with wood chips, are also available. These are dry-stacked without mortar and filled with concrete and structural steel. A potential concern is the susceptibility of wood to moisture and insect damage.
