Biogas is generated through the decomposition of organic materials in environments devoid of oxygen, a process known as anaerobic digestion. By employing advanced membrane gas separation technology, this raw biogas can be refined to eliminate contaminants and extract carbon dioxide. The result is high-Btu renewable natural gas (RNG) that meets pipeline quality standards, serving as a low-carbon alternative to conventional fossil fuel-derived natural gas.

Feedstocks for renewable natural gas (RNG) production include landfills, livestock manure, and separated organic waste. Among these, landfills represent the most substantial source and offer a particularly viable feedstock due to their consistent and long-term generation patterns.

RNG is functionally interchangeable with conventional fossil natural gas. It is frequently utilized as a substitute for diesel in transportation, for electricity generation, and for heating residential and commercial buildings. Additionally, RNG serves industrial purposes and can be employed as a feedstock for producing renewable hydrogen.

Archaea's facilities capture carbon dioxide (CO2) generated at landfills as part of their renewable natural gas (RNG) production process. The company's plants collect landfill gaswhich primarily consists of methane (CH4) and CO2 that would otherwise be managed through flaringand transport it to their facilities for processing into marketable RNG. During this process, the CO2 is separated from the methane and can be permanently stored in underground geological formations.

Integrating carbon capture and storage (CCS) capabilities into Archaea's operations provides a safe, contained, and effective method for reducing CO2 emissions while enhancing the long-term economic competitiveness of RNG.
