Distinguish Between Sintered Felt Filter Cartridges & Sintered Mesh Filter Cartridges

In an ever-evolving industrial environment, advances in filtration technology are providing more choices. When it comes to filtration solutions, metal sintered mesh filter cartridges and sintered felt filter cartridges are popular considerations for engineers and clients. Both are highly efficient filtration materials based on sintering technology, but differ in application and performance.

The purpose of this article is to provide you with an in-depth understanding to help you make an informed choice between metal sintered felt filter cartridges and sintered mesh filter cartridges.

Sintered Felt Filter Cartridges

Sintered felt filter cartridges consist of metal sintered felt as the primary filter material. The pleated design further provides a large filtration area and increases the dirt-holding capacity. They are extremely porous, evenly distributed and can be welded and folded into different shapes. We offer three types of sintered felt filter cartridges: without steel wire twined, with steel wire twined and with square openings at outer layer to match different filtration needs.

Sintered Mesh Filter Cartridge

Sintered mesh filter cartridge filter material: multi-layer metal sintered mesh is a new type of filtration material made of multi-layer metal wire mesh through special laminated pressing and vacuum sintering. It can reasonably match and design the gap size, permeability, and strength characteristics of the material, so that it has excellent filtration precision, filtration impedance, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, heat resistance, and processability, and its comprehensive performance is significantly better than other types of filtration materials.

We provide a general sintered mesh filter element and an internal folding sintered mesh filter element. General sintered wire mesh can be used as filter material directly. Nevertheless, the existing technology, to increase the filtration area and at the same time with the characteristics of sintered wire mesh, the sintered wire mesh will be folded and processed.

How to Choose the Right Sintered Carbon Filters

What is Sintered Carbon filter?

As a core component of modern water purification systems, industrial filtration and high-end water treatment, sintered carbon filter cartridges have attracted a lot of attention due to their high adsorption capacity, long-lasting durability and environmentally friendly features. However, with a wide variety of products on the market and varying quality, how to scientifically select a sintered carbon cartridge that suits one's needs has become a key issue. This article will provide a systematic selection strategy from the principle, materials, performance indicators to practical application scenarios.

What are the dvantages of sintered carbon filter cartridge?

Uniqueness of sintering process

Sintered carbon filter cartridge combines nano-sized activated carbon powder with binder (e.g. polymer material) through high temperature sintering technology to form a porous mesh structure. This process not only retains the high specific surface area of activated carbon (usually - m²/g), but also realizes the dual function of physical interception and chemical adsorption through pore control.

When to Use Container handling electric gantry crane?
  • Integration of adsorption and filtration: both adsorption of dissolved pollutants such as residual chlorine and heavy metals, and interception of suspended particles (e.g., sediment, colloids).
  • High precision and controllable: the pore size range can be precisely controlled at 0.1-60 microns to meet the needs of different scenarios.
  • Strong stability: high temperature resistance (up to 450 ℃), corrosion resistance, suitable for complex working conditions.

5 factors for choosing sintered carbon filter cartridge

1.Material selection: activated carbon raw materials and sintering process

Wire Mesh Guide | Types, Uses & Selection Tips

Coconut shell carbon vs:coat carbon

  • Coconut shell carbon is recognized as the best raw material because of its small carbon particles (below 80 mesh) and large adsorption surface area, especially suitable for household water purification.
  • Coal carbon has lower cost, but the adsorption efficiency is a little inferior, mostly used in industrial crude filtration.

Difference in sintering process:

  • High temperature sintering (200-300℃): the binder is completely carbonized, forming a pure carbon skeleton and avoiding secondary pollution.
  • Low-temperature compression: Containing plastic binder (such as PE resin), easy to block the microporous, adsorption efficiency decreased.
  • Identification method: drop a drop of water on the surface of the cartridge, if it penetrates quickly, it is high-quality sintered carbon; if it floats, it is low-quality extruded carbon.

2.Matching of filtration precision and flow rate

Micron level selection:

  • 0.1-1 micron: suitable for removing bacteria and viruses (such as medical water).
  • 5-10 micron: Ideal range for household water purification, balancing filtration effect and flow rate.
  • Above 30 micron: preferred for industrial pre-treatment or high turbidity water sources.

Balance between flow rate and pressure drop:

High-precision cartridge may increase the resistance of water flow, need to be selected according to the rated pressure of the equipment.

3.Compressive and temperature resistance performance

  • Compressive strength: high-quality sintered carbon filter element can withstand more than 10 kilograms of water pressure, to ensure long-term use without deformation.
  • Temperature range: Stainless steel sintered cartridge can withstand temperature up to 450℃, while ordinary plastic shell cartridge is limited to below 80℃.

4. Environmental protection and service life

  • Reusability: More than 70% performance can be restored through backwashing or ultrasonic cleaning, reducing replacement costs.
  • Lifespan assessment: generally 6-12 months in household scenarios, need to be dynamically adjusted in combination with water hardness and pollutant concentration.

5. Comprehensive consideration of cost-effectiveness

  • Initial cost: Sintered carbon cartridge price is usually 30%-50% higher than granular carbon, but the long-term maintenance cost is lower.
  • Brand and certification: Priority is given to brands that have passed NSF and ISO certification (e.g. Hengge, Jiajiebao) to ensure material safety.

Application and Customization Options

1. Household water purification system
Reverse osmosis water purifier: 1-5 micron sintered carbon should be used as the pre-filter to protect RO membrane from residual chlorine oxidation.

Post-filter cartridge for direct-drinking machine: choose 0.1 micron sintered carbon to improve taste and inhibit bacterial growth.

2. Industrial water treatment
Food and beverage industry: 316L stainless steel sintered cartridge, corrosion-resistant and in line with food-grade standards.

Chemical filtration: titanium alloy or nickel-based alloy to resist strong acid and alkali corrosion.

3. Special demand scenarios
High fluoride water area: choose aluminum or calcium composite sintered carbon, targeted removal of fluoride.

High temperature gas dust removal: multi-layer sintered felt filter element, pore size gradient design to enhance the dirt-holding capacity.

Maintenance and Common Problems

1.Cleaning method
Backwashing: Weekly reverse water flow flushing to remove surface clogging.

Ultrasonic cleaning: deep cleaning once a quarter to restore microporous permeability.

2. Common misconceptions
Myth 1: “The higher the flow, the better” - too high a flow will reduce the adsorption efficiency, need to match the equipment parameters.

Misconception 2: “All sintered carbon can be reused” - limited to high temperature sintered products without plastic binder.

Conclusion

The selection of sintered carbon filter cartridge requires comprehensive consideration of materials, processes, scenarios and maintenance costs. By scientifically matching the filtration precision, pressure resistance and environmental protection requirements, its performance can be maximized. In the future, with the advancement of material science, sintered carbon cartridges will show more potential in water purification and industrial filtration.
